America's best addiction treatment centers in 2023 based on Newsweek and Statista

Welcome to the renowned Hazelden Betty Ford treatment center where your care is rooted in empathy, expertise and a treatment plan built to meet your specific needs.

In 1949, at a lakeside retreat near Center City, MN, the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation's earliest clinicians developed the addiction treatment approach now used worldwide. Originally known as the Minnesota Model, the substance abuse treatment approach combined expert clinical care with then-emerging Twelve Step mutual support practices. Above all, alcohol and drug addiction treatment at the pioneering Hazelden Betty Ford facility was provided with empathy and respect.

Today, our flagship drug rehab center continues to lead the behavioral health field with innovative, evidence-based treatment practices, mental health services and research-informed approaches. From our earliest days, we've understood what it takes to get your life back from substance abuse disorders and related mental health conditions. And we're here to provide you with the diagnosis, treatment plan, mental health services and recovery support you need and can trust.

Inpatient Drug and Alcohol Addiction Treatment

When enrolled in our inpatient alcohol and drug rehab program, also known as a residential treatment facility, you will receive care and participate in treatment programming while living at one of our on-campus housing units. Inpatient treatment involves 24/7 clinical support, your personalized treatment plan, and holistic care including:

  • Medical stabilization and drug detoxification
  • Medical and mental health assessments
  • Education about the disease of addiction
  • An introduction to recovery principles
  • Gender-informed and all-gender programming

  • Individual counseling and therapy
  • Medical services
  • Integrated mental health services for dual-diagnosis (co-occurring mental health disorders*)
  • Special-focus groups
  • Twelve Step Facilitation therapy

As you advance through rehab, our clinicians might recommend that you transition to less structured outpatient programming..

Specialized Residential Rehab and Recovery Programs

Opioid Use Disorder Program (medication-assisted treatment options)
Developed by a team of clinicians at the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation, COR12® (Comprehensive Opioid Response with the Twelve Steps) is an evidence-based treatment program designed to help patients diagnosed with opioid addiction manage the discomfort of opioid withdrawal and reduce craving.

This inpatient program at our Center City, MN, treatment center typically involves an extensive level of recovery support and follow-up care. Our ultimate goal is to discontinue medication use and help patients live free from chemical dependence and drug abuse..

Professionals Program
Problem solving, caretaking, perfectionism—the very strengths many professionals possess can be stumbling blocks in addiction recovery. Peer support, shame reduction and return-to-practice readiness are key focus areas of our specialized drug treatment program for professionals.

This inpatient program also includes group sessions with other professionals as well as individual sessions with a counselor to address career restoration, licensing and/or monitoring matters, and professional practice and reputation.

Outpatient Rehab

While outpatient alcohol and drug rehab at Hazelden Betty Ford varies in frequency and intensity, all programs are built on evidence- and abstinence-based, Twelve Step practices.

Day Treatment
Whether you are admitted directly into our day treatment program or you are stepping down from a higher level of care, this intensive rehab option (also known as partial hospitalization) provides you with more support and guidance than a standard outpatient treatment program. Programming is five hours a day, five days a week, and treatment duration is based on your individual clinical needs.

Our day treatment program incorporates substance use and mental health treatment, individual, group and gender-informed therapy, educational workshops, Twelve Step facilitation and relapse prevention. All patients live on campus.

Specialized programming is available for patients with an opioid use disorder, including options incorporating medication-assisted therapy.

Virtual Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
With morning sessions or evening sessions offered, our virtual intensive outpatient program makes treatment possible if in-person participation isn’t feasible for you. Programming usually starts at three hours a day, four days a week, then decreases in frequency as you progress through treatment. Our IOP level of treatment is rooted in Twelve Step facilitation, other evidence-based practices and mental health services. We also offer special-focus groups for patients who identify as LGBTQIA+, for patients with an opioid use disorder, and for patients who are male-identifying or female-identifying. If you identify as transgender or nonbinary, you are welcome to participate in the groups that best fit your needs.

Help and Healing for Families Affected by Addiction

Through our Family Program, support groups and family counseling, you and your loved ones can learn how to work through the difficulties you are experiencing. You will understand how to set healthy boundaries and begin to rebuild trusting relationships.

Many of our family services are free and available to anyone. In addition, many are provided virtually so you can access support from anywhere.

Hazelden Betty Ford offers two mental health support groups specifically for families:

  • Families Affected by Addiction - This group provides connection, understanding and a confidential place to share the experiences and challenges of having a significant other who has an alcohol or drug problem.
  • Recovery Relationships - These sessions bring loved ones together to learn about the impact of addiction on relationships and discuss how to repair or improve relationships and build healthy communication.

Teen Intervene

Hazelden Betty Ford's Teen Intervene screening and brief intervention program is designed to help young people identify the reasons, effects and potential consequences of their alcohol or other drug use. This research-based program provides teens with a personalized course of action for making healthier choices, and offers parents the education, support and guidance they need to understand what's going on and what's at stake.
