| Dr. Weisner is Professor, Department of Psychiatry, University of California, San Francisco, and Investigator, Division of Research, Northern California Kaiser Permanente. She has a MSW from the University of Minnesota, and a doctorate in Public Health from the University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Weisner directs a research program addressing access, treatment outcome, and cost effectiveness of alcohol and drug treatment in public and private settings, including managed care.
Dr. Weisner is a member of the International Expert Advisory Group on Alcohol and Drug Dependence of the World Health Organization and of the National Advisory Council of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, and has been a member of the National Advisory Council for the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment. She has participated on several Institute of Medicine committees, including "Broadening the Base of Alcohol Treatment" and "Managing Managed Care." As a member of the Washington Circle, she is developing performance indicators for alcohol and drug identification and treatment in health plans. Published works include studies of the impact of financing and social policy on substance abuse treatment, cost-effectiveness of treatment, and the interaction among alcohol, drug, and mental health problems; and epidemiology of alcohol problems among treated and untreated populations. She is the Principal Investigator of NIAAA, NIDA, and RWJF research grants that study the cost and effectiveness of alcohol and drug treatment interventions, including a study of utilization and cost of treating adolescents and adults with co-occurring disorders. Dr. Weisner works closely with public and Kaiser Permanente programs on policy issues and in developing best practices. Her on-going work focuses on the changing systems for receiving health, substance abuse and mental health services. |
