IMR (Illness Management Recovery)

The Illness Management Recovery (IMR) program is an evidence-based practice that teaches mental health consumers how to take care of their psychiatric illness and get on with their lives.  Videos will be used to illustrate the benefits of illness management, and to demonstrate how specific information and skills are taught in IMR sessions.  Participants in the workshop will observe a demonstration of an IMR group session and will participate in several hands-on exercises, including a role play of helping consumers identify personally meaningful goals and breaking them down into manageable steps.

After this 2-day training workshop participants will:

  • Understand the rationale for teaching illness management to consumers
  • Understand the importance of recovery as a personal motivating factor
  • Understand the logistical aspects of delivering the program
  • Recite the evidence supporting the program
  • Understand how the program can be used in different settings and the frequency of providing the groups
  • Understand the agency standardization and protocols of delivering the services
