Model of Treatment and Its Outcomes

by Randy Stinchfield, Ph.D. and Pat Owen, Ph.D.

This study presents a description of "the Minnesota Model" of addiction treatment. This 12-step facilitation model utilizes the philosophy of Alcoholics Anonymous as a therapeutic tool for recovery from alcohol and drug addiction. Data was gathered from 1,083 patients upon admission into Hazelden, and at one, six and 12 months post-treatment. Fifty-three percent reported abstinence at 12 months, and an additional 35 percent reported reductions in drug and alcohol use. This model of treatment consistently yields satisfactory results.
