| This study examines the differences in clinical presentation and treatment outcomes of older adults diagnosed with alcohol dependence compared to middle-aged adults. The prospective naturalistic study included 1358 patients admitted to a residential program for alcohol dependence rehabilitation. Older adults who entered alcohol rehabilitation programs were less impaired on several psychiatric and addiction indices, but more impaired in somatic health. While abstinence rates at one month were not significantly different, fewer older adults engaged in formal post-discharge aftercare than middle-aged adults.
