Professionals in Residence
Plymouth, MN
Since 1981 the Hazelden Center for Youth and Families (HCYF) has helped thousands of youth, ages 14-25, find freedom from alcohol and other drugs and regain hope for healthier and more fulfilling lives. Situated on 15 picturesque, wooded acres along the north shore of Medicine Lake in Plymouth, Minnesota, HCYF provides the ideal setting to begin the journey to recovery.
Professionals at HCYF begin by observing the four-day Parent Program from Sunday afternoon through Wednesday. The Parent Program educates parents and caregivers about alcohol and drug addiction and its effects on the entire family. It provides a foundation of education, support and practical tools to empower parents as they journey on the path of family recovery. By observing this program, professionals gain a strong foundation of the disease and ongoing recovery for youth. The next two days include individual meetings with staff from the interdisciplinary team to broaden knowledge. Observation in patient groups and activities on a treatment unit give an indepth look into the treatment process. Another key learning opportunity provided is observing treatment planning and clinical staffing with the interdisciplinary team. This unique combination of learning is a highlight of the PIR Program noted by participants.
"As a physician resident in family medicine, I have always been challenged with patients who are addicted to alcohol and drugs and I have felt helpless as to what I can do to help them. The understanding which I got from this training has changed my way of thinking about them. Now I feel I can relate more to them, their issues and join hands with them in facing the problem." –PIR participant
