Expectations

Professionals in Residence Program (PIR)This educational experience has far exceeded my expectations and transformed the way I think of addiction as a disease process and recovery.

Gaining an understanding of alcoholism

I feel as if my eyes have been opened to a fuller understanding of alcoholism and other chemical addiction and now know that it truly is a disease. This gives me a lot more compassion and empathy for my patients who are suffering from these types of addictions/illnesses. I have more compassion and understanding of what the patients' "family" must be going through as well.

What happens after we make the referral?

Chemical dependence treatment is directly relevant to the practice of every physician, and the training that we are able to receive as PIRs is quite edifying. This one-week experience was important in allowing me to see, up close, the work that takes place outside of the office, after we have made the referral for CD treatment. It is a fresh perspective.

Learn about challenges of addiction

This week has been an eye-opening experience. Being able to meet with and discuss the very real and very personal difficulties people have within addiction has been an amazing experience. I feel that I will leave here this week with not only a better understanding and empathy for what challenges people face in addiction, but I will also have a more open heart and mind related to people's struggles with addiction.

Medical School education

Medical school is sorely lacking in education regarding addiction. Without this opportunity, I would be ill-equipped to care for people in the community with addiction. My future and current patients will receive better care thanks to your help.

Spending time on the units

My favorite and most memorable moments were the times spent on the units. The experiences I have had with the patients in primary care have influenced my future practice in medicine greatly. Their stories, their pain and their honesty have influenced me to become more open and supportive to listening in the future. Thank you again for this superb experience.
