| Hazelden programs and services integrate the clinical practice of multiple professional disciplines with a self-help and mutual support approach of Alcoholics Anonymous. A medical assessment is performed by an experienced nurse, with a physical done by the attending physician. Next, a psychological assessment is done by the psychologist; social assessment is done by the addiction counselor; and a comprehensive evaluation is done by the counseling staff. Other assessments may be added based on fitness and recreation interests, or family issues. The clinical team then collaborates on a comprehensive treatment plan for each individual patient and monitors progress through the program. This process also results in a continuing care plan and referrals or recommendations for any additional services deemed appropriate following discharge.
Our treatment philosophy includes treating all clients with dignity and respect based on the belief that clients have the ability to learn and grow when provided with appropriate support, education and direction. Therapy includes peer interaction, individual counseling, group therapy, and, based on the individual's needs, may involve specialty groups such as relapse prevention, anger, eating issues, cognitive behavioral therapy, women's issues, men's issues, gender issues, assertiveness, Twelve Step group study, family issues and similar special topics. Daily lectures by clinical staff and alumni educate clients on a broad range of topics including psychological, medical, social, spiritual, and Twelve Step work. Mental health services are available to clients with coexisting mental health issues. We address ongoing mental health needs during primary treatment or as part of the continuing care program. Bibliotherapy provides clients with basic educational materials including the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous, Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, daily meditation materials (such as "Twenty-four Hours a Day" and "Each Day a New Beginning") and other related topical materials. Clients may also access a wealth of Hazelden materials to address other issues. Overall Hazelden's approach is holistic, and is based on sound clinical practice and a researched model that follows up with patients and continually works to enhance clinical standards. |
