Stephanie O'Malley, Ph.D.

Stephanie O'Malley, Ph.D. is a Professor and Director of the Division of Substance Abuse Research in the Department of Psychiatry at the Yale University School of Medicine. She is the Director of Addiction Services at the Connecticut Mental Health Center. Dr. O'Malley received her Ph.D. in 1983 in Clinical Psychology from Vanderbilt University and joined the faculty of Yale University School of Medicine in 1984.

The major focus of her research is on the development of more effective treatments for substance use disorders, primarily alcohol and tobacco. Dr. O'Malley's landmark study on the efficacy of naltrexone was pivotal to the approval of this medication by the Food and Drug Administration for use in the treatment of alcoholism in 1994. She was the first chair of the Steering Committee of the NIAAA sponsored multi-site study of Combining Medications and Behavioral Treatments for Alcohol Dependence. 

Dr. O'Malley was President of the Research Society on Alcoholism from 2001-2003. She has published over 175 papers, chapters and books and received the Joel Elkes International Award for Exceptional Contributions to Psychopharmacology from the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology in 1998, the Dan Anderson Research Award from the Hazelden Foundation in 2005, and the Betty Ford Award from the Association for Medical Education and Research in Substance Abuse in 2008. She served on the National Advisory Council on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism of the National Institutes of Health from November 2002 – March 2007.
