Stephen T. Higgins, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Psychology, University of Vermont, Burlington, was awarded Hazelden's first Dan Anderson Research Award in 1996.
Higgins' work concentrated on improving treatment approaches to cocaine addiction. Some of the major findings of his research include: 1) that the use of incentives can be effective in achieving short-term abstinence, 2) outpatient settings are viable options for the treatment of cocaine addiction, and 3) that alcohol use, even in modest amounts, is a major obstacle to achieving abstinence from cocaine for addicts and abusers.
