A Chance To Grow
I had a flash of insight when writing my book, The Recovering Body. My illness wants to separate me from my body. Keeping them connected is hard work and success is more likely when compassion rather than coercion is the guiding force. When I can take care of this body – the house in which I live – with love instead of force, I have a chance at discovering who I am and what I’m made of. I give myself a chance to grow.

Exercise and Activity
Seek a support network: others who like to walk, a yoga or tennis class – anything to encourage activity.
Sleep and Rest
Forgo sleep aids and make time for regular aerobic exercise. Just 12 minutes a day can get your sleep back to normal.
Nutrition and Fuel
It takes work to eat well, but the rewards are a healthier you and a better ability to handle the stress that life will send your way.
Sexuality and Pleasure
Focusing on intimacy rather than on casual encounters can help the brain regain its ability to make good judgments.
By focusing our attention, we do the equivalent of “mental push-ups”, creating new neural networks to replace those damaged by addiction.
