John MacDougall

Director of Spiritual Guidance and Family Program

John MacDougall, Director of Spiritual Guidance and the Family ProgramJohn MacDougall, D.Min., is Director of Spiritual Guidance at Hazelden, and serves as the clinical director for the Spiritual Care Department and the Family Program in Hazelden's Center City, Minnesota campus. His responsibilities include overseeing the clinical practices of those departments. He also provides spiritual care to men on the Silkworth Unit, lectures to patients and in the Hazelden Graduate School of Addiction Studies, writes for Hazelden publications, and speaks for Hazelden continuing education programs. He also speaks widely in outside continuing education programs and at regional Alcoholic Anonymous events.

MacDougall is a graduate of Rutgers College in New Brunswick, New Jersey. He obtained his Master of Divinity degree from Princeton Theological Seminary in Princeton, New Jersey and his Doctor of Ministry degree from the Theological School of 
Drew University in Madison, New Jersey.  He was ordained as a United Methodist Minister in 1976 and served as a parish pastor for seventeen years before coming to Hazelden as an extension ministry in 1994.

MacDougall is the co-author with Bowen White, M.D. of Clinician's Guide to Spirituality, a McGraw-Hill/Hazelden book published in 2002. He has led a number of retreats for physicians in recovery, especially for the Washington State physician's assistance program, and a number of A.A. retreats, as well as having spoken for a number of A.A. anniversary dinners and special programs. His career at Hazelden has allowed him to do several Hazelden events for referents and professionals on spiritual growth as relapse prevention, or how working a Twelve Step program helps prevent relapse.

MacDougall is an enormously popular recovery speaker to audiences across the country and writes the "Slogans and Self-Talk for Recovery People" column for Hazelden's Voice newsletter. He has provided several print and broadcast interviews as an expert on spirituality in recovery and the importance of educating the family about the disease of addiction.

MacDougall has two adult daughters and three grandchildren and resides with his wife in Saint Paul, Minnesota.
