Terry Shapiro
Executive Director of Hazelden in Chicago
Terry Shapiro, Executive Director of Hazelden in Chicago, BSW, CADC, has over 10 years of experience in executive leadership roles in the addiction treatment field. Most recently with Rosecrance as the vice president of Management Services prior to joining Hazelden in the spring of 2010.
Shapiro brings over 25 years experience working in the field of chemical dependency, including two and a half years in Los Angeles as an interventionist before the practice became popular. Shapiro's career began as an alcohol and drug abuse counselor in Illinois and served as an employee assistance counselor for Amtrak Railroad covering the southern United States. He then served as the executive director for The Council of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Services in Tennessee. Shapiro was called to develop and implement prevention programs in schools and provide counseling to youth and their families in Bogota, Colombia,
South America. While living there, he enjoyed success as a scout for the Chicago Cubs in Colombia and operated a baseball academy. Throughout his career in addiction treatment, Shapiro has been a resource for other treatment programs in improving the quality of their chemical dependency treatment services.
Shapiro has presented at national and regional conferences on the Importance of continuing care planning and Addiction in the Workplace. He has also provided several print and broadcast interviews on addiction treatment, how to recognize signs of addiction in a co-worker or loved one, and that prevention and treatment works.
Shapiro received his Bachelors in Social Work from Winona State University in Minnesota where he was a member of the baseball team. He met his wife while attending the university, who was an exchange student from Colombia, South America. He also holds a Masters in Counseling with an emphasis on addictions and is fluent in Spanish.
Shapiro resides with his wife and children in Chicago.
