Doctoral Psychology

Training program

Orientation

For the first several weeks an orientation program acquaints you with Hazelden National Recovery Services, Minnesota Recovery Services, Hazelden Mental Health Centers and related Hazelden services. A variety of presentations, observational experiences and other activities will help you learn about Hazelden Mental Health Centers, Minnesota Recovery Services, Butler Center for Research and the Hazelden Graduate School of Addiction Studies.

Direct services

Interns are expected to schedule 15-20 direct service hours per week in the following areas:

  • Individual psychological services
  • Assessment and diagnosis
  • Diagnostic interview
  • Psychological testing
  • Risk assessment and crisis management
  • Conflict resolution
  • Individual and group therapy (Twelve Step facilitation, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Enhancement Therapy)

Consultation (2-4 hours per week)

A major focus will be to represent the psychological dimensions of care as a member of the interdisciplinary treatment team. Additionally, interns will be responsible for patient lectures and staff continuing education training.

Group supervision (2 hours per week)

Interns will meet weekly with other members of the Mental Health team to discuss and engage in case review and group processes.

Individual supervision (2 hours per week)

Interns will meet with their primary or secondary supervisors for individual supervisory sessions. Doctoral level licensed psychologists will review and discuss cases, discuss observations, offer feedback regarding interactions with the interdisciplinary team and assist in further developing the intern's interests and skills.

Coursework

The interns audit selected classes offered through the Hazelden Graduate School of Addiction Studies: Introduction to Alcohol and Drug Dependency: Assessment and Diagnosis; Diagnostic Procedures (ASAM); Theory and Practice; Alcohol and Drug Dependency: Biological Perspective; Suicide Prevention; Minority Issues: Multicultural issues.

Internship trainings

These may include crisis management, chronic pain, adolescent development, PTSD, multicultural and addiction, anxiety and panic disorders, spirituality in recovery, the alcoholic family in recovery, motivational interviewing and suicide prevention.

Training and experience in multicultural service delivery

Hazelden has made an increasing commitment to training staff and interns in the area of diversity. Approximately 10% of our clients identify as racial/ethnic/minority groups, 10% as gay/lesbian/bisexual clients and 10% as persons of wealth and prominence. Continuing education trainings on multicultural, minority and diversity issues are offered through the Hazelden Graduate School of Addiction Studies. Additionally, the Minnesota APA Accredited Internship Consortium (MAAPIC) sponsors an all-day training for interns from all consortium sites on multicultural counseling issues.

Evaluation

At Hazelden, feedback and evaluation are valued as part of our commitment to continuous improvement. Our structured evaluations include the following:

  1. Pre and post intern self-assessment of skills
  2. Intern training plans
  3. Intern and supervisor written evaluations at midpoint and completion of the internship
  4. Evaluation of coursework
  5. Evaluation of training

Final evaluation of the internship

Interns are asked to complete a program evaluation during the internship.
