Understanding the Nuances of the LGBTQ+ Community in Treatment Settings


This workshop will combine lecture, experiential, and collaborative work surrounding the need to address specifics in LGBTQ+ communities. It will shed the umbrella of LGBTQ+ in order to look at specific nuances of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer communities as individual subcultures. Starting with a short overview and refreshment of terminology, the course will create a path of understanding and exploring specifics in the LGBTQ+ communities. Participants will engage in dialogue, experiential work, and collaborative efforts in order to best address trauma for their LGBTQ+ clients.

Target Audience  Licensed alcohol and drug counselors, counselors, psychologists, mental health, LMFT, nurses, social workers (beginning, intermediate).

This presentation is designed to help attendees:
  • Obtain and refresh information surrounding LGBTQ terminology
  • Explore and understand implications within each specific LGBTQ sub culture
  • Identify common therapy missteps and how to repair the client relationship
  • Recognize the LGBTQ specific intersections of health, spirituality, mental health and maladaptive coping skills

Beck Gee-Cohen MA CADC-II, Director of LGBTQ+ Programming 

Beck Gee-Cohen is a masters level clinician with an undergraduate degree in sociology with an emphasis on gender and sexuality and a masters degree in addiction counseling from the Hazelden Betty Ford Graduate School of Addiction Studies. Gee-Cohen has worked in the mental health and substance use field for over ten years in various capacities. The main focus of his work has been invested in the LGBTQ+ community, adolescents and families. Over this decade, Gee-Cohen has trained numerous facilities on LGBTQ+ best practices, has been a keynote and presenter at many conferences, and has facilitated workshops about LGBTQ+, trauma, adolescents, gender and sexuality. 

Gee-Cohen is the director of LGBTQ+ Programming at Visions Adolescent Treatment Center. This program is for young people at Visions who identify in the community, those who are questioning and their families. It includes process groups, psychoeducation and family programming with professionals specifically trained and experienced in the LGBTQ+ population and best practices. Alongside the already dynamic team at Visions Mental Health and Wellness Center in Los Angeles, young LGBTQ+ people and their families will find a space that serves their specific needs in regards to healing and thriving. 


This in person event is open as a benefit to all employees, Graduate School alumni and students of the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation. Participants must attend the entire event and complete tests and evaluations to receive credit. Certificates will be provided following completion of tests and evaluations.
